On March 7 and 8, 2024, the first meeting of the “Forum on Metrology and Digital Transformation” took place, organized at the BIPM headquarters.

A forum on developments in metrology linked to new technologies

The forum-MD (Forum on Metrology and Digitalization), transversal to all areas of metrology, aims to advise the CIPM (International Committee of Weights and Measures) on the implementation of the digital framework of the SI and, more broadly , on developments in metrology linked to digital transformation.

During this meeting, representatives of national metrology laboratories and CIPM advisory committees presented the various advances made in this area as well as the themes of interest requiring common developments and in particular the Digital Calibration Certificate.

Furthermore, the BIPM presented the progress of its work regarding the “SI Reference Point ” which is already available in beta version. This is a digital version of the SI brochure which describes, among other things, all the basic units and their definitions. Ultimately, the BIPM aims for this “SI Reference Point” to become the first link in the future chain of traceability of measurements in the digital age.

Creation of thematic working groups

The meeting concluded with the creation of 8 working groups dedicated to specific themes:

  • Harmonization of digital calibration certificates
  • FAIR principle for metrology
  • Semantics and vocabulary of metrology
  • Data quality
  • Safe and reliable AI
  • Coordination between regional metrology organizations
  • Coordination between CIPM Consultative Committees
  • SI digital framework

During this meeting, the RNMF was represented by Stéphane Plumeri and Yannick Nouel from the LNE.
